So lately, I've been thinking about my work, and why I'm making it, and what I want it to say, and an idea that keeps popping up in my head, but I've never seriously thought about is scientific literacy. As you may or may not know, scientific literacy is downright pitiful in this country. My question for the group at large is: "Does it matter? Is scientific literacy important? (I think it is, but I'm not exactly unbiased, here)." If so, why? Why does the average person need to know about science?
And if scientific literacy is important, what types of science should we all be knowledgeable in? Is it important that the common person knows about geology? Why?
As I said, I have my own opinions, but I'm curious to hear what others have to say.
How scientifically literate are you?

Quote of the Week
Quote of the week, a little early because I feel like I've been neglecting the blog during the week, because tomorrow I'm going to the ACC Show in Baltimore, Friday, we're presenting the MFA applicants to the faculty, and I'll probably make up my GA hours in Ceramics that I'm missing tomorrow. Oh, and I need to get plane tickets to Savannah !!! And make work (work? what work? who said anything about work?)
And even though I've got a ton of other things to read for school and a ton of cool art books I want to read, and even though I've read it about a dozen times, I'm re-reading The Dispossessed, by Ursula K. LeGuin. So this week's quote reflects that. (Vonnegut had a good run, and I've got more, but it's time to move on).
"To be whole is to be part; true voyage is return."

Nudibranch
Since I seem to know a suprising amount of people who don't know what a nudibranch is ( including someone who has a DEGREE IN BIOLOGY!), here are some pictures:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Gastropoda
Order: Nudibranchia
No, these are not the same as Platyhelminthes (flatworms), and yes, I just like to say Platyhelminthes

Ah, nothing like fresh liver of sulfur. . . .
Acicular is NOT the same as bladed. . .
So what happens if I make a hundred tetrahedra? Will I get some sort of mineral?

Updates
Ok, so I bought the wrong thing at Wal-Mart. I bought a Windows uprade, for people that already have Windows, (which I don't), so I had to return it. I got real Windows from Staples, so now I can run Rhino (hopefully, fingers crossed)
My brother's web comic is slowly slipping in the standings, so log on and vote for him. Unless you think the world needs more fantasy/angsty/ comics with mediocre art and storylines that don't make any sense. Oh, and they fixed the registration bug, so if you couldn't register last week, try again.

Process Shot of the Week
This semester I'm going to try to post at least one photo a week of things that I'm working on. These are some waxes prior ot electroforming. Two have string embelisments and all but one have 50 mesh carborundum grit applied to the surface. Hopefully, these will come out with a nice texture.
This pic and a few others have been posted on my Flickr site.
